GMO foods are foods that have been changed genetically at the cellular level. They have been altered – sometimes with the same species and sometimes cross species – to make a crop more resistant to certain pests or even give it a certain appearance or flavor. These foods are then called GMO, or GE, or GM foods.
To date there isn't actually that much research to show whether or not GMO crops are harmful to humans. However, as time moves forward, more questions are being raised. What is clear is that GMO crops are harmful to farmers and the environment. It is becoming more than likely that a harmful effect from consumption will arise.
One of the biggest problems with GMOs is that currently there are no regulatory agencies that really have any power over biotech companies to control, test, or even know whether or not a certain GMO crop is safe for either humans or animals. But, as this GM experiment takes place, problems have occurred. It's becoming clear that GMOs can be dangerous economically and environmentally, and more and more we're learning that they can also be dangerous medically.
Currently there are nine GMO crops that are prolific. While there are GM tomatoes they're not a major GMO crop. It can be hard to find these crops in their organic form, and if you eat processed foods you are most definitely ingesting the GMO crop over the organic crop.
What's worse is that even though no GMO meats have been approved for the market, the fact that they're fed feed from GMO crops makes them a problem too. To avoid GMOs, always buy certified organic over conventionally grown and read the labels of any processed foods like cereal that you want to eat.
